SAFe® 6.0: Certifications and roles for successful agile scaling

The Scaled Agile Framework® (SAFe®) is a proven method for scaling agile practices. It enables teams to work together effectively to deliver valuable products. In this post, we take a look at the roles and courses in SAFe 6.0 and how you can contribute to better collaboration in your organization with appropriate certification.

What roles are there in the Scaled Agile Framework® and what do the certification courses look like?

In addition to the Leading SAFe training, also known as SAFe Agilist (SA), which provides a general overview of the framework, SAFe defines clear roles and responsibilities to facilitate collaboration. These roles include Certified Scrum Master (SSM), Product Owner/Product Manager (POPM).

Certified Scrum Master (SSM)

The Certified Scrum Master (SSM) is an expert in Scrum and agile project management. This role is responsible for promoting Scrum principles and practices throughout the organization. The SSM supports teams to work effectively and remove impediments.

Unlike traditional Scrum Master training, which focuses on the fundamentals of Scrum at the team level, the SAFe Scrum Master course explores the role of the Scrum Master in the context of the entire organization and prepares participants* to successfully plan and execute Program Increment (PI), the primary foundation for alignment at all levels of a SAFe organization. This includes learning the key components of Agile at Scale Development, how to support Scrum across the organization, and how to execute iteration planning.

The next Scrum Master certification course will take place on May 30 & 31 in English or on June 6 & 7 in German. In the course you will learn:

  • How to facilitate Scrum events.
  • How to support the Scrum team in preparing and carrying out PI planning
  • How to support PI execution.
  • How to coach teams to continually improve.

  • Distance learning via SAFe® Virtual Classrooms
  • Access to SAFe® Collaborate, a visual online workspace
  • One-year membership in the SAFe® Community Platform
  • Access to content, tools and resources you need for the daily practice of SAFe
