4 reasons to migrate your Atlassian products to the cloud

Cloud services are more secure, sustainable, flexible and cost-effective than ever before. And they provide businesses with fewer and fewer reasons to stick with on-premises solutions.

The advantages of a cloud solution

1) Cloud increases team productivity

The cloud boosts your team's productivity by doing one thing: shortening the IT team's to-do list.

In on-premises environments, IT teams have a whole host of tasks to perform - from server setup and replacement parts to troubleshooting major incidents and configuring the latest security features. With a cloud solution, the cloud provider handles many of these tasks. This gives the IT team more time to focus on the tasks that add the most value to your business.

When you host your software and products locally, engineering teams always have to invest more time. Scaling storage, inventory, or compute power to meet the needs of your users can take several days or even weeks and months. Upgrades and security patches require that you make time for them on a regular basis (not to mention the mental overload of scheduling and managing them). And major incidents that occur and the occasional late-night flurry of activity or security breach response is left entirely up to your IT team.

2) Instant upgrades

With the cloud, you get instant access to the latest features, security updates, and bug fixes.

If you're using your software and computing power in an on-premises environment, manual upgrades are required every time new features are released (typically two to four times a year). The obvious costs fall on the IT team, which must invest time and money to make changes. They also often have to plan for downtime, which can impact the entire business.

Because the cloud offers automatic scaling and instant security and feature upgrades, teams can move quickly and flexibly. They can make changes to processes and take advantage of new features and benefits that improve your workflows. And you can do it without lengthy approval processes, delays, or IT overhead.

3) Scale quickly and cost-effectively in the cloud

Most of us - regardless of the current size of the company - plan to continue to grow and scale the business.

However, growing too fast without scalable technology can have nasty consequences: Doubling product usage sounds fantastic. But not having technology in place to support it can lead to major incidents, unhappy customers, and stressed teams.

You need systems that are flexibly scalable. If you want to grow without massive technical issues, you can scale much faster, smarter, and cheaper in the long run with cloud technology than with on-premises servers.

The cloud is better for scaling because resources needed for scaling are always limited in on-premises installations. If you want your systems to continue running smoothly as your user base grows, your teams will need to either add more processing power (CPU, RAM) to existing computers (also known as vertical scaling) or add more servers/computers to your environment (horizontal scaling). However, by moving to the cloud, you can skip all the manual scaling steps of the on-premises environment.

The cloud supports remote work and distributed teams: For organizations still using on-premises-only infrastructure, remote work is complicated. Users can access on-premises installations remotely, but maintaining security is difficult with all the passwords, firewalls, VPN barriers, and architectural limitations. In comparison, cloud solutions can be accessed from anywhere with an internet connection. Cloud security is already built in and designed to work remotely.

4) Prevent outages thanks to regulated SLAs (and reduce admin costs)

If we compare the monthly subscription costs for the cloud with the costs for software licenses, the cloud appears more expensive at first glance. If we take into account the additional costs of migrating from the on-premise environment to the cloud, the cloud is almost always associated with higher investments in the short term. However, if we look at the long-term value, on-premises environments appear less as a conservative solution and more as one that continually erodes profits.

But why is that? Because the final price of local environments, like an iceberg, is hidden for now and could be higher than expected.

System downtime can cost up to three times as much as an annual subscription to the cloud in a matter of minutes or hours. By moving from on-premises environments to the cloud, IT effort and resources can be cut in half. And that's not even taking into account the operational expenses and costs of over-provisioning (which affects the majority of organizations with on-premises environments).

Local environments also come with a large number of hidden operational and physical costs that are not an issue with the cloud. These include, for example, servers, server support, office space, maintenance, software renewal, audits or power costs.
